Barbara Baltussen (°1982) groeide op in een muzikale familie en begon op zevenjarige leeftijd piano te spelen aan de Stedelijke Academie voor Muziek, Woord en Dans te Sint-Niklaas in de klas van Johan Lybeert. Hierna vervolgde ze haar studies aan het Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatorium te Antwerpen, in de klas van Levente Kende en Heidi Henderickx, waar zij haar diploma “meester in muziek” behaalde in juni 2006. Ze studeerde tevens aan het conservatorium van Amsterdam in de klas van Dhr. Jan Wijn.
Daarnaast nam Barbara deel aan verschillende masterclasses bij internationaal gerenommeerde musici zoals Jacob Lateiner, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Lee Kum-Sing, György Kurtàg, Charles Rosen, Udo Reinemann, Jard Van Nes, Rudolf Jansen, Rian De Waal e.a. Barbara is laureate van verschillende wedstrijden, waaronder Jong Tenuto, Cantabile, Axion Classics, E. Durletwedstrijd, …
Als soliste werkte zij samen met dirigenten als Etienne Siebens, Koen Kessels, Ivo Venkov, Silveer van den Broeck, Gert D’haese en Edmond Saveniers. Ze werkte tevens met ensembles en orkesten als het Brussels Philharmonic, het Vlaams Radio Koor, Octopus Symfonisch Koor, Walpurgis muziektheater e.a.
Barbara kiest er bewust voor om zich als pianiste, in een wereld waar de mogelijkheden zeer divers zijn, niet in één domein te specialiseren, maar om als muzikante zo breed mogelijk actief te zijn op verschillende terreinen. Op die manier ontstaat er een constante kruisbestuiving tussen die verschillende domeinen.
Zo werkt ze als docente piano in de academie voor Muziek, Woord en Dans van Bornem, en in de Kunsthumaniora van Brussel. Daarnaast is ze een veelgevraagde begeleidster op free-lance basis, en heeft ze een actief concertleven als kamermusicus en soliste. Ze is tevens ook aangesteld in het Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel als begeleidster.
Als soliste werkte ze ook een soloprogramma uit met werk van enkel vrouwelijke componisten en trad hiermee op in diverse concertzalen en festivals, zoals het internationaal pianofestival te Quaregnon in 2010. In juni 2014 creëerde Barbara het eerste pianoconcerto voor piano en ensemble van de jonge beloftevolle componist Gillis Sacré, dat aan haar werd opgedragen. Frank Nuyts componeerde in 2018 zijn 24ste en laatste pianosonate voor haar – ‘where the trail becomes a trace’- en deze zette ze op cd in januari 2019 (verschenen bij Hardscore Records)
Barbara is stichtend lid van Trio Khaldei en vormt tevens een begeesterend duo met haar vader Nico Baltussen.
Barbara Baltussen (°1982) grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of seven at the Academy for Music, Word and Dance in Sint-Niklaas in the class of Johan Lybeert. After this she continued her studies at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, in the class of Levente Kende and Heidi Henderickx, where she obtained her diploma “master of music” in June 2006. She also studied at the conservatory of Amsterdam in the class of Mr. John Wine.
In addition, Barbara participated in several masterclasses with internationally renowned musicians such as Jacob Lateiner, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Lee Kum-Sing, György Kurtàg, Charles Rosen, Udo Reinemann, Jard Van Nes, Rudolf Jansen, Rian De Waal and others Barbara is a laureate of several competitions, including Jong Tenuto, Cantabile, Axion Classics, E. Durlet Competition…
As a soloist she has collaborated with conductors such as Etienne Siebens, Koen Kessels, Ivo Venkov, Silveer van den Broeck, Gert D’haese and Edmond Saveniers. She has also worked with ensembles and orchestras such as the Brussels Philharmonic, the Flemish Radio Choir, Octopus Symphonic Choir, Walpurgis music theater and others.
Barbara consciously chooses not to specialize in one domain as a pianist, in a world where the possibilities are very diverse, but to be active as broadly as possible in different fields as a musician. In this way a constant cross-pollination is created between the different domains.
She works as a piano teacher at the Academy of Music, Word and Dance in Bornem and at the Kunsthumaniora in Brussels. In addition, she is a much sought-after accompanist on a free-lance basis, and she has an active concert life as a chamber musician and soloist. She is also appointed at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels as an accompanist.
As a soloist she also developed a solo program with work by only female composers and performed in various concert halls and festivals, such as the international piano festival in Quaregnon in 2010. In June 2014 Barbara created the first piano concerto for piano and ensemble by the young promising composer Gillis Sacré, which was dedicated to her. Frank Nuyts composed his 24th and last piano sonata for her in 2018 – ‘where the trail becomes a trace’ – and she recorded it in January 2019 (published on Hardscore Records).
Barbara is a founding member of Trio Khaldei and also forms an inspiring duo with her father Nico Baltussen.
