De stijl van Gary Hoffman wordt gekenmerkt door volheid van geluid, instrumentaal meesterschap en uitzonderlijke artistieke gevoeligheid.
Op zijn vijftiende maakte hij zijn debuut in de Wigmore Hall in Londen, al snel gevolgd door New York. Op zijn tweeëntwintigste werd hij de jongste door de faculteit aangestelde persoon in de geschiedenis van de Indiana University School of Music. Na het winnen van de Premier Grand Prix van de Rostropovich International Competition in Parijs in 1986, begon hij aan een internationale carrière en trad hij op met ‘s werelds meest bekende orkesten, in grote recital- en kamermuziekseries en op prestigieuze festivals.
Hoewel hij een grote genegenheid heeft voor het klassieke cello-repertoire, negeert Gary Hoffman de hedendaagse muziek, waarvan hij een toegewijd kampioen is, niet. Talrijke componisten, onder wie Graciane Finzi, Renaud Gagneux, Joel Hoffman, Laurent Petitgirard en Dominique Lemaître, om er maar een paar te noemen, hebben hun concerten aan hem opgedragen.
Hij is een regelmatige gast bij de Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York, en is een opmerkelijke en veelgevraagde kamermuziekpartner.
Hij heeft opnames gemaakt voor BMG (RCA), Sony, EMI en Le Chant du Monde, en neemt nu op bij het label La Dolce Volta.
Gary Hoffman woont sinds 1990 in Parijs. Hij speelt op een Nicolo Amati uit 1662, de ‘ex-Leonard Rose’.
In 2011 werd de heer Hoffman benoemd tot Maître en Résidence voor cello aan de prestigieuze Muziek Kapel Koningin Elisabeth in Brussel.

He made his debut at the Wigmore Hall in London at the age of fifteen, quickly followed by New York. At the age of twenty-two he became the youngest faculty appointee in the history of the Indiana University School of Music. After winning the Premier Grand Prix of the Rostropovich International Competition in Paris in 1986, he embarked on an international career, appearing with the world’s most noted orchestras, in major recital and chamber music series and at prestigious festivals.
Although he has great affection for the classical cello repertoire, Gary Hoffman does not neglect contemporary music, of which he is a committed champion. Numerous composers, among them Graciane Finzi, Renaud Gagneux, Joel Hoffman, Laurent Petitgirard and Dominique Lemaître, to name only a few, have dedicated their concertos to him.
He is a regular guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York, and is a remarkable and much sought-after chamber music partner.
He has made recordings for BMG (RCA), Sony, EMI and Le Chant du Monde, and now records on the La Dolce Volta label.
Gary Hoffman has lived in Paris since 1990. He performs on a 1662 Nicolo Amati, the ‘ex- Leonard Rose’.
In 2011, Mr. Hoffman was appointed Maître en Résidence for cello at the prestigious Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Brussels.
