Gina Beukes liep school in Johannesburg en studeerde viool bij Alan Solomon.
Sinds 1975 werd ze gaandeweg bekend als één van Zuid-Afrika’s meest getalenteerde jonge violistes en begon als soliste met vooraanstaande orkesten van het land op te treden. Ze toerde met het National Youth Orchestra in 1978 en gedurende het volgende jaar werd ze uitgekozen om het International Youth Orchestra te leiden op het Aberdeen Festival in Schotland. In 1981 reisde ze door Taiwan als Concertmeester van de Harmonia Juventia en dirigeerde het Johannesburg Youth Chamber Orchestra.
Ze kreeg verscheidene beurzen en mede dankzij een sponsor kon ze haar studies verder zetten in de VS. Met een Starling Scholarship financierde ze haar studies in Cincinnati bij Dorothy Delay. In 1983 won ze de Cincinnati Concerto Competition. Ze leidde het Cincinnnati Philharmonic Orchestra gedurende een rondreis met als hoogtepunt een concert in Carnegie Hall. Vanaf 1984 studeerde Gina aan de Juilliard School of Music in New-York en in 1988 en voegde ze een diploma Master in de Muziek toe aan haar academische en professionele verworvenheden.
In 1989 begon ze les in viool en altviool te geven aan de Stellenbosch Universiteit. Ze werd benoemd tot hoofd violiste van het Cape Town Symphony Orchestra in 1990.
Aan de Universiteit van Cincinnati doctoreerde ze in 1991 tot ze in 1992 terugkeerde naar Zuid-Afrika om de rol van Concertmeester van het Cape Town Symphony Orchestra op te nemen. Ze bleef recitals en concerto’s spelen.
In 1994 toerde ze meerdere keren met het Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Later in dat jaar werd ze tot solo tweede violiste van het London Philharmonic Orchestra benoemd. In die jaren werkte ze ook met de bekende dirigenten Solti, Haitink, Jansens, Weltzer-Most, Mazur, Baremboim, Termikanov en vele anderen. In 2003 werd ze tot violiste bij het London Symphony Orchestra benoemd met Valeri Gergiev als chef dirigent.
Gina speelt kamermuziek in Engeland en Frankrijk met het Barbican Quartet en het Defoe Trio.
Aan de Juilliard School speelde ze in een strijkkwartet met cellist Jean-Guihen Queras. In Zuid-Afrika leidde ze de top kamermuziek groep, het Impromptu Trio. Ze leidt ze het Barbican Quartet met cellist Moray Welsh, solo cellist van het London Symphony Orchestra.
Momenteel is Gina eerste solist altviool bij het symfonisch orkest van Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.
Gina Beukes went to school in Johannesburg and studied the violin with Alan Solomon.
Since 1975 she gradually became known as one of South Africa’s most talented young violinists and began performing as a soloist with the country’s leading orchestras.
She toured with the National Youth Orchestra in 1978 and during the following year was selected to conduct the International Youth Orchestra at the Aberdeen Festival in Scotland. In 1981 she toured Taiwan as Concertmaster of the Harmonia Juventia and conducted the Johannesburg Youth Chamber Orchestra.
She received several scholarships and thanks to a sponsor she was able to continue her studies in the US. With a Starling Scholarship she financed her studies in Cincinnati with Dorothy Delay. In 1983 she won the Cincinnati Concerto Competition. She led the Cincinnnati Philharmonic Orchestra on a tour culminating in a concert at Carnegie Hall.
From 1984, Gina studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and in 1988, adding a Masters in Music degree to her academic and professional achievements.
In 1989 she started teaching violin and viola at Stellenbosch University. She was appointed principal violinist of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra in 1990.
She received her doctorate from the University of Cincinnati in 1991 until she returned to South Africa in 1992 to take on the role of Concertmaster of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. She continued to play recitals and concertos.
In 1994 she toured several times with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Later that year she was appointed solo second violinist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In those years she also worked with the well-known conductors Solti, Haitink, Jansens, Weltzer-Most, Mazur, Baremboim, Termikanov and many others. In 2003 she was appointed violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra with Valeri Gergiev as principal conductor.
Gina plays chamber music in England and France with the Barbican Quartet and the Defoe Trio.
At the Juilliard School she played in a string quartet with cellist Jean-Guihen Queras. In South Africa she led the top chamber music group, the Impromptu Trio. She leads the Barbican Quartet with cellist Moray Welsh, principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Gina is currently principal viola with the symphonic orchestra of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.
