Josu Okiñena wijdt zijn professionele activiteit aan onderzoek en interpretatie en ziet dit als een wetenschappelijke interdisciplinaire activiteit. Hij promoveerde aan de universiteit van Valladolid. Na het behalen van de eerste prijs piano en kamermuziek aan het Conservatorio Superior in zijn geboorteplaats Donostia-San Sebastián nam hij les bij Felix Lavilla. Hij won de eerste prijs aan het Real Conservatorio de Música in Madrid en in Santiago de Compostela behaalde hij de prijs Andrés Segovia en José Miguel Ruiz Morales, gewijd aan de interpretatie van Spaanse muziek.
Later verhuisde Josu naar New York om te studeren aan de prestigieuze Julliard School of Music, waar hij leerling van Oxana Yabloskaya was.
Hij zette zijn studie verder in Londen, met artiesten als Krystian Zimmerman, Bruno Leonardo Gelber en Ivo Pogorelich als mentoren. Tevens kreeg Josu les van Maria Curcio, een oud-leerling van de legendarische pianist Arthur Schnabel.
In 2001 keert Josu Okiñena terug naar zijn geboorteplaats Donostia om met zijn pedagogische werk de oprichting van de belangrijkste muziekschool in Baskenland, Musikene, te ondersteunen.
Vanwege zijn toewijding aan de hedendaagse muziek en in het bijzonder aan de componisten van zijn land, bracht hij in 2006 samen met het Euskadi Symfonie Orkest het ‘Concerto voor piano en orkest’ van Ignacio Tellería in première.
Josu Okiñena heeft samen met Cecilia Lavilla Berganza de volledige werken voor zang en piano van Felix Lavilla opgenomen. Met Almudena Ortega registreerde hij de volledige werken voor zang en piano van Aita Donostia.
In maart 2011 ontving Josu Okiñena de prijs van de Universiteit van Baskenland en de Orfeón Donostiarra voor zijn onderzoek naar componist Aita Donostia getiteld ‘Autopoietische communicatie, de basis voor muzikale interpretatie: zijn studie in het werk voor stem en piano van Ja Donostia.’
In 2013 nam hij een cd op voor het label Sony Classical met pianocomposities van Aita Donostia. Ook nam hij voor Sony Classical een selectie pianowerken van Erik Satie op.
De Baskische muzikant werkt momenteel ook hard aan andere muzikale projecten, onder meer wil hij bijdragen aan hernieuwde belangstelling voor klassieke muziek in de Baskische diaspora. Tevens bereidt hij een album over Franz Liszt voor.

He earned his PhD at the University of Valladolid. After winning the first prize for piano and chamber music at the Conservatorio Superior in his hometown, Donostia-San Sebastián, he took lessons from Felix Lavilla and secured the first prize at the Real Conservatorio de Música in Madrid, as well as the Andrés Segovia and José Miguel Ruiz Morales Prize for the interpretation of Spanish music in Santiago de Compostela.
Subsequently, he moved to New York to study at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, learning from Oxana Yabloskaya. Continuing his studies in London, he received guidance from performers such as Krystian Zimmerman, Bruno Leonardo Gelber, and Ivo Pogorelich. For five years, he took lessons from Maria Curcio, a former student of the legendary pianist Arthur Schnabel.
In 2001, Josu Okiñena returned to his hometown, Donostia, to contribute to the pedagogical work supporting the establishment of the Music Highest School in the Basque Country, Musikene. In 2006, owing to his commitment to contemporary music and, in particular, the composers of his country, he premiered Ignacio Tellería’s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra” alongside the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra.
Josu Okiñena has recorded the complete works for voice and piano by Felix Lavilla with Cecilia Lavilla Berganza and the complete works for voice and piano by Aita Donostia with Almudena Ortega. In March 2011, he received a prize from the University of the Basque Country and the Orfeón Donostiarra for his research on composer Aita Donostia, titled “Autopoietic Communication, the Basis for Musical Interpretation: His Study in the Work for Voice and Piano by JA Donostia.”
In 2013, he recorded a CD for the Sony Classical label featuring piano compositions by Aita Donostia. He also recorded a selection of piano works by Erik Satie for Sony Classical. Currently, the Basque musician is involved in other musical projects, including an initiative for the recovery of classical music in the Basque diaspora and an album about Franz Liszt.
