Justus Grimm werd in Hamburg geboren en begon op vijfjarige leeftijd cello te spelen, eerst onder begeleiding van zijn vader. Daarna studeerde hij in Saarbrücken bij Ulrich Voss en in Keulen bij Claus Kanngiesser en Frans Helmerson. Hij won eerste prijzen op de ‘Maria Canals International Music Competition’ en op het ‘Deutsche Musikwettbewerb’.
Als solist creëerde hij Matthias Pintschers celloconcerto ‘La Metamorfosi di Narciso’ met het Hamburgs Filharmonisch Orkest. Verder concerteerde hij met tal van orkesten zoals het English Chamber Orchestra, het Symfonieorkest van de Munt, het London Chamber Orchestra, het Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, het Brandenburger Philharmonisch Orkest en de Klassische Philharmonie Bonn. Met het Symfonieorkest van de Munt bracht hij Tsjaijkovski’s Rococo Variaties onder leiding van Carlo Rizzi, het concert werd door Canvas Klassiek uitgezonden.
Justus legt zich actief toe op kamermuziek en nam met pianist Florian Wiek cellosonates op van Beethoven, Brahms en Sjostakovitsj. Samen met fluitiste Christina Fassbender vormen ze het Trio Wiek, waarmee ze verschillende opnames maakten, met onder meer werk van Weber, Farrenc en Mendelssohn. In 2009 kwam hun Philippe Gaubert-album uit, dat vijf ‘Diapasons’ kreeg. Sinds 2008 verdiept Justus zich ook in het kwartetrepertoire met het Malibran Quartet.
Verder deelde hij het podium met onder meer Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Gérard Caussé, Augustin Dumay, Benoît Fromanger, Stephen Kovacevich, Katia en Marielle Labèque en Christian Poltéra. Deze concerten brachten hem in de grote concertzalen en festivals in Europa. Op het ‘Cantiere Festival’ in Montepulciano is hij sinds 2010 Artist in Residence.
Sinds 2008 is Justus docent aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen. Justus Grimm speelt op een instrument van Christian Bayon uit het jaar 2010.
Justus Grimm was born in Hamburg and started playing the cello at the age of five: first under the guidance of his father, then he studied in Saarbrücken with Ulrich Voss and in Cologne with Claus Kanngiesser and Frans Helmerson. He won First Prizes at the Maria Canals International Music Competition and the Deutsche Musikwettbewerb.
As a soloist he created Matthias Pintscher’s cello concerto La Metamorfosi di Narciso with the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra; he has also performed with numerous orchestras such as the English Chamber Orchestra, the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra, the London Chamber Orchestra, the State Orchestra Rheinische Philharmonie, the Brandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Classical Philharmonie Bonn. With the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra, he performed Tsjajkovsky’s Rococo Variations conducted by Carlo Rizzi in a concert broadcast by Canvas Klassiek.
Justus Grimm is actively involved in chamber music and recorded cello sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms and Shostakovich with pianist Florian Wiek. Together with flutist Christina Fassbender they form the Trio Wiek, with which they made several recordings, including works by Weber, Farrenc and Mendelssohn. In 2009 their Philippe Gaubert album was released, which got 5 Diapasons. Since 2008, Justus Grimm has also studied the quartet repertoire with the Malibran Quartet.
He also shared the stage with Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Gérard Caussé, Augustin Dumay, Benoît Fromanger, Stephen Kovacevich, Katia and Marielle Labèque and Christian Poltéra. These concerts took him to major concert halls and festivals in Europe. He has been Artist in Residence at the Cantiere Festival in Montepulciano since 2010.
Since 2008 Justus Grimm has been a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Justus Grimm plays a Christian Bayon instrument from the year 2010.
