Mathieu van Bellen (°1988) uit Hulst begon zijn vioolstudie in België bij Nico Baltussen en vervolgde zijn opleiding bij Jan Repko aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. In London studeerde hij bij Itzhak Rashkovsky en in Berlijn aan de Hochschule für Musik bij Ulf Wallin.
Hij was laureaat in verschillende wedstrijden en won verder de MBF, RPS Emily Anderson Prize, de Philharmonia Martin Musical Scholarship Funds Awards en Making Music Awards. Ook kreeg hij de Bach Prize en werd hij String Player of the Year 2008 op de Royal College of Music. In 2015 won Mathieu de Grachtenfestival Prijs Amsterdam, waardoor hij in 2016 Artist in Residence was.
Mathieu gaf concerten in Europa, Azië en in de VS, speelde op grote muziekfestivals in heel Europa en gaf meerdere radio en televisie optredens. In 2014 was hij concertmeester van het Europees Jeugd Orkest onder leiding van Vasily Petrenko en Vladimir Ashkenazy. In 2017 gaf hij zijn eerste volledige recital in de Kleine Zaal van het Concertgebouw Amsterdam en was hij solist bij het Nederlands Studenten Orkest onder leiding van Jurjen Hempel.
Mathieu is een actief kamermusicus. In concerten voor kamermuziek werkte hij onder andere samen met Shlomo Mintz, Miguel da Silva, Michael Collins en Bruno Giuranna. In 2014 richtte hij het Scaldis Kamermuziek Festival op, dat elk jaar in mei in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, de geboortestreek van Mathieu, plaatsvindt.
Mathieu is violist in het veelgeprezen Busch trio. Dit trio won in 2016 de prestigieuze Anton Kersjes Prijs, en gaf onder andere concerten in het Concertgebouw en Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ Amsterdam, BOZAR en Flagey in Brussel en Wigmore Hall in Londen. Ze zijn Artist in Residence op de Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel te Waterloo. Mathieu van Bellen werd in 2017 benoemd tot artistiek directeur van het Reizend Muziek Gezelschap, als opvolger van Christiaan Bor.
In 2017 ontving Mathieu het Ereburgerschap van de Gemeente Hulst, voor zijn inzet voor jeugd en muziek in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Zijn eerste CD kwam uit in November 2014, met solowerken van Bach, Christian Blaha en Béla Bartók.
Mathieu speelt op de ex-Adolf Busch G.B. Guadagnini viool (Turijn 1783) en met een strijkstok van Dominique Peccatte, die hem door private sponsoren in bruikleen werden gegeven.
Mathieu van Bellen (°1988) was born in Hulst and started studying the violin in Belgium with Nico Baltussen. He continued with Jan Repko, first at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and then at Chethams School of Music in Manchester. He continued at the Royal College of Music in London with Itzhak Rashkovsky and at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, with Ulf Wallin.
He was laureate in different competitions and won the MBF, RPS Emily Anderson Prize, Philharmonia Martin Musical Scholarship Fund Awards and Making Music Awards. He was also awarded the Bach Prize and the String Player of the Year 2008 at the Royal College of Music. In 2015 Mathieu won the Grachtenfestival Prize, resulting in a residency during the 2016 Grachtenfestival.
He has given concerts in Europe, Asia and the USA, playing in major music festivals all over Europe and has appeared several times on television and radio. In 2014 he was concert master of the European Union Youth Orchestra, working with Vasily Petrenko and Vladimir Ashkenazy. In 2017 he was soloist of the Netherlands Student Orchestra and he was asked to succeed Christiaan Bor as artistic director of the Reizend MuziekGezelschap, also known as the Amsterdam Chamber Music Society.
Mathieu is an active chamber musician, having played chamber music concerts with artists including Shlomo Mintz, Miguel da Silva, Michael Collins and Bruno Giuranna. In 2014 he founded the Scaldis Kamermuziek Festival, a yearly chamber music festival in the area of Zeeland in the Netherlands.
Mathieu is violinist of the Busch Trio. With this Trio he has performed in Europe and Asia, playing in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall London, BOZAR Brussels and NCPA Beijing. They are currently recording the entire Dvorak chamber works with piano on Alpha Classics, and in 2016 they won the prestigious Dutch Kersjes Prijs.
Mathieu’s first CD was released in November 2014, with solo works by Bach, Blaha and Bartók. He plays on the ex-Adolf Busch G.B. Guadagnini violin (Turin, 1783), using a Dominique Peccatte bow, both on loan to him thanks to private sponsorship.
