Pierre Fontenelle ontplooit zich als solist, kamermusicus en orkestmusicus in binnen- en buitenland. Toen hij elf jaar was, hij woonde toen in de Verenigde Staten, begon hij op eigen houtje met cello spelen.
Daarna studeerde hij aan het Conservatorium van Luxemburg en zette zijn opleiding verder aan het Institut supérieur de musique et de pédagogie (IMEP) in Namen. Na een eerste Master specialiseerde hij zich in het Sovjet repertoire bij Han Bin Yoon aan het Conservatorium van Mons, waarna hij zich verder ontwikkelde in Parijs bij Anne Gastinel in de Debussy-promotie (2022-2023) van de Jaroussky Academy. Momenteel is hij leraar cello aan het IMEP.
Hij won meerdere prijzen, op het ‘Breughelconcours 2022’ kreeg hij de eerste prijs evenals de publieksprijs en de prijs voor beste vertolking. Tijdens de ‘Edmond Baert International Cello Competition 2019’ ontving hij zowel de eerste prijs als de Feldbusch-prijs, op de ‘Belgium Cello Society International Competition’ sleepte hij de tweede Van Hecke-prijs in de wacht.
Op 20-jarige leeftijd trad Pierre in 2019 toe tot de Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège als cello-solist onder leiding van Speranza Scappucci, waardoor hij de jongste vaste muzikant in het orkest werd. Pierre is voormalig cello-solist van de Koninklijke Opera van Wallonië-Luik en Namen van het Jaar 2020. Tegelijkertijd is hij gastdirigent of gast cellosolist bij het Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, het Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg en het Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine.
Als solist concerteerde hij met verschillende orkesten, het Koninklijk Filharmonisch Orkest van Luik, de Muziekkapel van Doornik, Groothertogelijke Militaire Muziek, Koninklijke Muziek van de Gidsen en anderen. Dit op tal van podia en festivals, in België maar ook in onder meer China, Taiwan, Slovenië, Kroatië en Nederland.
Ook gepassioneerd door compositie, populaire en hedendaagse muziek, creëerde hij met accordeonist Cristian Perciun het duo Made in Belgium. Op de ‘Accordé ‘Opale International Competition’ behaalde het duo de eerste prijs. In 2020 nam de Luxemburgse accordeonist Frin Wolter de fakkel over, het duo werd dan omgedoopt tot Kiasma.
In augustus 2020 richtte hij de ‘Concerts des Dames’ op in de abdij van Notre-Dame du Vivier in Marche-les-Dames.
Pierre bespeelt een cello van Nicolas-François Vuillaume uit 1860, ter beschikking gesteld door de Koning Boudewijnstichting dankzij de vrijgevigheid van het Fonds Léon Courtin-Marcel Bouché en de Stichting Strings for Talent.
Pierre Fontenelle develops himself as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician at home and abroad. When he was eleven years old, when he lived in the United States, he started playing the cello on his own.
He then studied at the Luxembourg Conservatory and continued his education at the Institut supérieur de musique et de pedagogie (IMEP) in Namur. He won several prizes, at the ‘Breughel Competition 2022’ he received the first prize as well as the audience prize and the prize for best interpretation. At the ‘Edmond Baert International Cello Competition 2019’ he received both the first prize and the Feldbusch Prize, at the ‘Belgium Cello Society International Competition’ he won the second Van Hecke Prize.
At the age of 20, Pierre joined the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège in 2019 as a cello soloist under the direction of Speranza Scappucci, making him the youngest permanent musician in the orchestra. Pierre is a former cello soloist of the Royal Opera of Wallonia-Liège and Namur of the Year 2020. At the same time, he is guest conductor or guest cello soloist with the Orchester Philharmonique de Liège, the Orchester Philharmonique de Luxembourg and the Orchester National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine.
As a soloist, he has performed with various orchestras, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, the Music Chapel of Tournai, Grand Ducal Military Music, Royal Music of the Guides and others. This on numerous stages and festivals, in Belgium, but also in China, Taiwan, Slovenia, Croatia and the Netherlands.
Also passionate about composition, popular and contemporary music, he created the duo Made in Belgium with accordionist Cristian Perciun. The duo won first prize at the ‘Accordé ‘Opale International Competition’. In 2020, the Luxembourg accordionist Frin Wolter took over the torch, the duo was then renamed Kiasma.
In August 2020, he founded the ‘Concerts des Dames’ at the Abbey of Notre-Dame du Vivier in Marche-les-Dames.
Pierre plays a cello by Nicolas-François Vuillaume from 1860, made available by the King Baudouin Foundation thanks to the generosity of the Léon Courtin-Marcel Bouché Fund and the Strings for Talent Foundation.
