    Shuya Tanaka werd geboren in 1994 in Fukuoka, Japan. Op vijfjarige leeftijd begon hij piano te spelen en drie jaar later startte hij met zijn cellostudie. Zijn muzikale zoektocht leidde hem naar Katsumi Sadakuni die rond zijn veertien jaar zijn celloleraar werd. Door een masterklas in Japan kwam Shuya in contact met de westerse muziekcultuur en de Vlaamse cellist Jan Sciffer. Een jaar later verhuisde hij naar België en begon zijn studie aan het kso Lemmensinstituut te Leuven bij Jan Sciffer. In 2014 beëindigde hij zijn kso-studie aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven waarna hij zijn muziekstudies verderzette bij Justus Grimm aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Antwerpen. Omwille van zijn eminente artistieke prestaties ontving Shuya in 2016 een studiebeurs van de Stichting Conservatorium Antwerpen. In 2017 behaalde hij zijn bachelordiploma met grootste onderscheiding en later ook het masterdiploma summa cum laude.

    Als kind trad Shuya regelmatig op in de Sadakuni Academy. Op zijn elfde werd hij finalist van het National Japan Classic Concours. Twee jaar later gaf hij zijn eerste recital in zijn geboortestad. In 2012 won hij de eerste prijs met grootste onderscheiding op de Belfius Classics wedstrijd. Op de prijsuitreiking speelde hij het celloconcerto van Camille Saint-Saëns samen met het Mechels Kamerorkest onder leiding van Tom Van den Eynde. Sinds 2013 is Shuya een graag geziene gast op het muziekfestival van de Miniemenkerk te Brussel waar hij als solist optreedt met het strijkensemble ‘Mindspeler’ onder leiding van Tigran Maytesian. In 2018 won hij de derde prijs in de internationale muziekwedstrijd ‘Triomph de l’Art’.

    Samen met pianist Stijn Claeys vormt Shuya een duo en geeft vertolkingen van het geijkte repertoire, zoals de sonates van Shostakovich, Prokofiev en Brahms. In 2015 vertolkte hij het celloconcerto van Haydn met het Oost-Vlaams Kamerorkest onder leiding van Bruno De Schaepdrijver. Hij volgde verschillende cello-masterclasses bij onder andere Daniel MüllerSchott, José Enrique Bouché, Gustav Rivinius en JeanGuihen Queyras. Hij treedt op als chambrist en solist onder meer bij het Cello Quartet ASSAI, Werther Piano Kwartet, Frascati Symphonic, Ataneres Ensemble, Inaudita Orchestra en andere occasionele groepen en ensembles. Daarnaast is hij ook actief als componist en schrijft hij voornamelijk cellowerken voor zijn eigen recitals en concerten.


    Shuya Tanaka was born in 1994 in Fukuoka, Japan. At the age of five he started playing the piano and three years later he started studying the cello. His musical quest led him to Katsumi Sadakuni who, around the age of fourteen, became his cello teacher. Through a masterclass in Japan, Shuya came into contact with Western music culture and the Flemish cellist Jan Sciffer. A year later he moved to Belgium and started his studies at the kso Lemmens Institute in Leuven with Jan Sciffer. In 2014 he finished his secondary education studies at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven and began his higher music studies with Justus Grimm at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. Because of his outstanding artistic achievements, Shuya received a scholarship in 2016 from the Antwerp Conservatory Foundation. In 2017 he obtained his bachelor’s degree with highest distinction and later also the master’s degree summa cum laude.

    As a child Shuya performed regularly at the Sadakuni Academy. At the age of eleven he became a finalist in the National Japan Classic Competition. Two years later he gave his first recital in his hometown. In 2012 he won the first prize with highest distinction at the Belfius Classics competition. At the award ceremony he played the cello concerto of Camille Saint-Saëns together with the Mechelen Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tom Van den Eynde. Since 2013 Shuya has been a welcome guest at the music festival of the Minemen Church in Brussels, where he performs as a soloist with the string ensemble “Mindplayer” conducted by Tigran Maytesian. In 2018 he won third prize in the international music competition “Triomph de l’Art”.

    Shuya forms a duo with pianist Stijn Claeys and gives interpretations of the standard repertoire, such as the sonatas by Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Brahms. In 2015 he performed Haydn’s cello concerto with the East Flemish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Bruno De Schaepdrijver. He took several cello masterclasses with Daniel MüllerSchott, José Enrique Bouché, Gustav Rivinius and JeanGuihen Queyras, among others. He performs as a chambrist and soloist with the Cello Quartet ASSAI, Werther Piano Quartet, Frascati Symphonic, Ataneres Ensemble, Inaudita Orchestra and other occasional groups and ensembles. He is also active as a composer and mainly writes cello works for his own recitals and concerts.
