Sylvia Thereza, geboren in Rio de Janeiro (Brazilië), begon op driejarige leeftijd met haar muziekstudies al improviserend met haar vader. Ze trok al snel de aandacht van het muzikale métier in Brazilië en vervolgde haar studie bij grote figuren uit de Zuid-Amerikaanse pianistische traditie. Haar talent trok later ook de aandacht in de VS, waar ze werd gesponsord voor haar studie bij de Russische pianiste Bella Davidovich in New York en later in België, bij Alan Weiss. Kostbare steun kwam er ook van Nelson Freire, Earl Wild en Sergio Tiempo.
Haar kunstenaarschap wordt algemeen erkend door zowel het grote publiek als muziekcritici, maar ook door musici als onder andere Maria João Pires, Nelson Freire en Teresa Berganza.
Sylvia treedt al sinds haar zesde op als solist en kamermusicus over de hele wereld.
Als winnaar van de “Martha Argerich-editie” van het Internationale Pianoconcours van Vigo (2019) en van de Nelson Freire Competitie (2004) wordt Sylvia regelmatig uitgenodigd om te spelen op tal van festivals en in orkesten, zoals vb. het Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Sao Paulo Symphonic Orchestra, Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra, Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, Hannover Chamber Orchestra en Brussels Philharmonic. Als bevlogen kamermusicus speelt ze regelmatig met Maria João Pires, met celliste Judith Ermert en in trio met Ning Kam (viool) en Judith Ermert (cello).
Als onderdeel van haar sociale inzet en muzikale filosofie ontwikkelde Sylvia een baanbrekend project dat klassieke muziek in haar geboorteland Brazilië introduceerde bij meer dan 12.000 kinderen die in kansarme omstandigheden leven. Sylvia voelde al op zeer jonge leeftijd de behoefte om een speciale methodologie te ontwikkelen die filosofische diepgang, speelse experimenten en de veerkrachtige kant van kunst samenbrengt en de artistieke visie van Villa-Lobos, Kodály en Gramani combineert. Deze benadering van het leven en de kunst bracht haar zeer dicht bij de internationaal geprezen pianiste Maria João Pires, die haar als haar beschermeling omhelsde. Na enkele jaren les te hebben gegeven aan Sylvia Thereza en het podium te hebben gedeeld in vele landen over de hele wereld, nodigde Maria João Pires haar uit om haar assistent-professor te worden aan de Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth in België, een functie die ze bekleedde van 2012 tot 2016.
Sylvia is medeoprichter van Uaná Association For the Arts, in België, een organisatie die muziek brengt naar sociaal achtergestelde kinderen en kinderen met een lichamelijke beperking.
Sylvia Thereza, born in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), began her musical studies improvising with her father at the age of three. She soon caught the attention of the musical métier in Brazil and later continued her studies with great figures of the South American pianistic tradition. Her talent later called attention on the US, where she was sponsored for studying with the Russian pianist Bella Davidovich, in New York, and later in Belgium, with Alan Weiss. Precious support also came from Nelson Freire, Earl Wild and Sergio Tiempo.
Her artistry has been widely recognized by both the general public and music critics as well as by musicians such as Maria João Pires, Nelson Freire and Teresa Berganza, among others.
Sylvia has been performing since the age of six as a soloist, chamber musician and recitalist all over the world.
Laureat at the “Martha Argerich edition” on the International Piano Competition of Vigo (2019) and also winner of Nelson Freire Competition (2004); Sylvia has been regularly invited to play in many Festivals and Orchestras, such as Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Sao Paulo Symphonic Orchestra, Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra, Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, Hannover Chamber Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, among others. As an enthusiastic chamber musician she regularly plays with Maria João Pires, with cellist Judith Ermert and in trio with Ning Kam, violin and Judith Ermert, cello.
As part of her social commitment and musical philosophy, Sylvia developed a pioneering project that introduced classical music across her native Brazil to more than 12,000 children living in the most underprivileged social conditions. Sylvia, since a very early age, felt the need to develop a special methodology that brings together philosophical depth, playful experimentation and the resilient side of art, combining the artistic vision of Villa-Lobos, Kodály and Gramani. This approach to life and art brought her extremely close to the internationally acclaimed pianist Maria João Pires, who embraced her as her protégé. After teaching Sylvia Thereza for several years, and sharing the stage in many countries around the globe, Maria João Pires invited her to become her assistant professor at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium, a post that she has held from 2012 to 2016.
Sylvia is Co-Founder of Uaná Association For the Arts, in Belgium, an organization that brings music to socially and physically disadvantage children.
