Vlorent Xhafaj begon met cello op 6-jarige leeftijd. Op zijn zestiende won hij de eerste prijs van de eerste editie van de “Young Talents”, en een paar weken later vertrok hij naar Frankrijk. Hij vervolgde zijn studie bij V. Marin-Queyras aan het Regionaal Conservatorium van Parijs, waar hij in 2003 zijn diploma behaalde met een unanieme eerste prijs. Ondertussen kreeg hij adviezen van grote muzikale persoonlijkheden als het Alban Berg Quartet, Philippe Muller, Enrico Dindo, Tilmann Wick, Miklos Perenyi, Mario Brunello.
Hij studeerde daarna in de klas van Anne Gastinel aan het Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon, waar hij een masterdiploma en een eerste prijs cello en kamermuziek behaalde.
Hij was lid van ‘s werelds beste jeugdorkesten, zoals Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, Mahlerjugendorchester, Lucerne Festival Orchestra Jugend (als eerste cello in 2007 en 2009) en speelde met dirigenten als Valery Gergiev, Pierre Boulez, Herbert Blomstedt, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sir Neville Marriner enz.
In solo en kamermuziek trad hij op in theaters als Ircam (Parijs), Philarmonie (Koln), KKL (Luzern), Salle Molière (Lyon), Cité de la Musique (Parijs), Palais des Congres (Straatsburg), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) , Suntory Hall (Tokio), Teatro Coliseo (Buenos Aires), Teatro Bradesco (Sao Paulo). Hij speelde op alle continenten met warme recensies van pers en publiek.
Zijn repertoire omvat enkele premières van hedendaags werk van oa. Luis de Pablo, Bruno Mantovani, Georges Aperghis. Hij heeft een zeer breed repertoire, waaronder het grote werk voor cello, maar ook werken die niet vaak worden gespeeld, zoals alle werken voor cello en piano van Franz Liszt, de werken van Busoni (Kultaselle, Kleine Suite), Suk (Ballade en Serenade), Prokofiev (inclusief de Ballade, het Concertino en de Sonate voor cello solo), Saint Saens sonates n.1 en 2, de Myaskovsky-sonates, enz.
Zijn kamermuziekpartners zijn onder meer Irina Zahkarenkova, Tedi Papavrami, Boris Brovtsyn, Francois-Frederic Guy, Ilya Gringolts, Akiko Suwanai, Nikita Boriso Glebsky, Alexander Kobrin, Peter Laul of Severin von Eckardstein. Hij speelt regelmatig met het Ensemble Intercontemporain, Orchestre de Paris, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, Royal Philarmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Philarmonique de Strasbourg.
