Wouter Valvekens is een Belgische concertpianist. Hij werd uitgenodigd om op te treden in België, Italië, Nederland, Duitsland, Portugal, Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk, dit in solorecitals en als solist met het Euregio Jeugdorkest, het St. John’s Chamber Orchestra en het Mechels Kamerorkest. In 2020 maakte hij zijn recitaldebuut in deSingel Antwerpen en in de Henri Le Boeufzaal van BOZAR Brussel.
Naast zijn solocarrière is Wouter Valvekens actief in kamermuziek. Enkele jaren geleden richtte hij met violiste Alice Van Leuven en cellist Paul Heyman het trio Aries op. Het trio won in 2020 de Supernova Kamermuziekwedstrijd en nam in juli 2021 zijn debuut-CD op. Hij debuteerde met het ensemble in de Henri Le Boeufzaal van BOZAR Brussel, wat door critici lovend werd onthaald. Wouter Valvekens is ook stichtend lid van het Werther Piano Quartet, dat door het Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund ondersteund wordt. Het debuut van het ensemble in het Konzerthaus Dortmund in 2018 werd op lovende kritiek onthaald.
Wouter Valvekens nam deel aan meerdere internationale wedstrijden. In 2016 won hij de eerste prijs en de publieksprijs op de ‘Internationale VriendenCultuurPrijs-pianowedstrijd’ in Tilburg, en de derde prijs op de ‘César Franck International Piano Competition’. In 2019 won hij de eerste prijs op de ‘Paços Premium International Competition’ in Portugal.
Wouter Valvekens kreeg zijn eerste pianolessen op zesjarige leeftijd aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium van Mechelen, waar hij studeerde bij Rita Degraeuwe. Hij behaalde met grote onderscheiding zijn diploma van bachelor in de muziek aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Antwerpen, bij Polina Leschenko. Van 2018 tot 2020 studeerde hij bij Ian Fountain, waar hij in september 2020 zijn masterdiploma haalde. In 2020 startte Wouter Valvekens zijn studies op historische instrumenten bij Piet Kuijken in het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel.
Wouter Valvekens volgde masterclasses bij onder andere András Schiff, Imogen Cooper, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Richard Goode, Klaus Hellwig en Eldar Nebolsin. Hij wordt ondersteund door de Winifred Christie Trust Award en door Inspiratum vzw. De Londense Hattori Foundation verleende hem een Senior Award. Wouter Valvekens geniet eveneens van het mecenaat van de SWUK voor het volgen van masterclasses en voor het faciliteren van de door hem gegeven concerten.
Wouter Valvekens is a Belgian concert pianist. He has been invited to perform on various occasions in Belgium, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom, for solo recitals and with orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra of Mechelen, the Euregio Youth Orchestra and the St. John’s Chamber Orchestra in Maidenhead. Apart from his solo career, Wouter Valvekens is also a very active chamber musician. He is a founding member of the ‘Trio Aries’, which won the prestigious Supernova Chamber Music Competition 2020. The ensemble made its debut in the Henri Le Boeuf-Hall of BOZAR Brussels. He is also a founding member of the ‘Werther Piano Quartet’, supported by the Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund. The ensemble debuted in the Konzerthaus Dortmund in 2018, receiving critical acclaim.
Throughout his studies, Wouter Valvekens actively participated in numerous national and international competitions. In 2014 he received the first prize at the Belfius Classics competition. He was a finalist at the International VriendenCultuurPrijs Theaters Tilburg and was awarded the second prize in the International André Charlier piano competition in 2015. In 2016, he won the 1st prize and the prize of the audience in the international VriendenCultuurPrijs piano competition in Tilburg, the Netherlands, and the 3rd prize in the César Franck International Piano Competition. Wouter won the first prize and two special prizes at the International Paços Premium Competition in Paços de Brandão, Portugal.
Wouter Valvekens received his first piano lessons at the age of 6 at the Conservatory of Mechelen, where he studied with Rita Degraeuwe from 2004 to 2014. From 2014 to 2018, Wouter studied with Polina Leschenko at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. In 2017, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Music magna cum laude. From 2018 to 2020 he studied with Ian Fountain at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he earned his Postgraduate degree in 2020. His studies at the Academy were generously supported by the Winifred Christie Trust Award, a scholarship award from Inspiratum vzw and a Senior Award from the Hattori Foundation.He has participated in various masterclasses with András Schiff, Imogen Cooper, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Richard Goode, Klaus Hellwig, Frank Braley amongst others. Wouter Valvekens is also supported by the SWUK Flanders Foundation to follow masterclasses worldwide.
